Do you need to Winterize Your Car?
December 10, 2023
As colder weather makes its way into our everyday lives, it is important to make sure your car is ready. Winterizing your vehicle is a must do for all. As the temperature drops the needs of your car can change. Here is a list of a few areas that need to be checked before the weather gets colder.
1. Battery – When temperatures drop, the need to use some of your vehicle’s accessories may increase. As it gets dark earlier and earlier, the increased usage of lights can drain your battery more quickly. Turning that heat on can have the same effect on your battery.
2. Coolant system – Make sure that your hoses are free from cracks and leaks. Check your coolant level to ensure that it is at the optimal level.
3. Braking system – Check that your brake pads are at full operating capacity. Ensuring that your brake pads are not worn down or in need of replacing will create a better braking system. A good braking system is vital in all seasons but, in colder weather the ice and snow on the roads may increase the need for new brake pads.
4. Tires – Check to make sure that the psi is correct on all tires. This info can usually be found on the sticker located on the inside of the driver’s side door or in the manual. A 10 degree drop in temperature can cause a 1-pound loss of pressure in your tire. Incorrect psi can cause a blowout going over the tiniest of potholes. Do a visual check of your tires as well, making sure that the treads are in good shape and that there aren’t any flat spots on the tire. Don’t forget the spare tire!
These are just a few areas of the vehicle that need attention before the temperatures get too low. If you find any issues with your vehicle, having it checked by a professional before those issues cause bigger problems is highly recommended.
