What Causes a Coolant Leak? 7 Common Culprits (And Why You Should

If you’ve noticed a puddle of bright green, orange, or pink fluid under your car, there’s a good chance you’re dealing with a coolant leak. It might seem like a minor issue, but ignoring it can lead to overheating, engine damage, and repair bills that are far more expensive than fixing the original leak. Here’s a look at what typically causes coolant to leak — and what you should do about it.

1. A Damaged or Deteriorated Radiator

The radiator is the heart of your cooling system, and over time it can develop small cracks, pinhole leaks, or corrosion — especially in older vehicles. Road debris can also puncture the radiator, and the plastic end tanks found on many modern radiators become brittle with age and heat cycling, eventually cracking at the seams.

2. Worn or Cracked Hoses

Your engine relies on a network of rubber hoses to carry coolant between the radiator, engine, and heater core. These hoses are constantly exposed to heat, pressure, and vibration, which causes the rubber to dry out, crack, or become soft and swollen over time. A leak often starts small, appearing as a slow drip or a stain near a hose connection before it worsens.

3. A Failing Radiator Cap

It’s easy to overlook, but the radiator cap plays a critical role in maintaining pressure within the cooling system. When the seal wears out, it can’t hold pressure properly, which may cause coolant to leak out or boil over. A bad cap is a simple, inexpensive fix — but it’s often missed during a basic inspection.

4. A Leaking Water Pump

The water pump circulates coolant throughout the engine, and it relies on an internal seal and bearing to do its job. When that seal wears out, coolant can seep out around the pump’s weep hole or shaft. A failing water pump is one of the more serious causes of a coolant leak, since it can also lead to a complete loss of coolant circulation if the pump fails entirely.

5. A Blown Head Gasket

The head gasket seals the engine block to the cylinder head, keeping coolant and oil passages separate from the combustion chambers. When it fails, coolant can leak externally, or worse, internally into the engine oil or combustion chamber. Signs of a blown head gasket include white, milky oil, sweet-smelling exhaust smoke, or a bubbling radiator — this is a serious repair that shouldn’t be delayed.

6. Corroded Heater Core

Tucked inside the dashboard, the heater core is a small radiator-like component that warms the cabin air. Because it’s made of thin metal or aluminum tubing, it’s prone to corrosion over time. A leaking heater core often shows up as a sweet smell inside the car, fog on the windshield, or wet carpet on the passenger side floor.

7. Loose or Damaged Hose Clamps and Fittings

Sometimes the cause isn’t a failed part at all — it’s simply a clamp that has loosened or a fitting that wasn’t properly seated. Vibration and heat cycling over years of driving can gradually loosen these connections, allowing small amounts of coolant to escape.

Why You Shouldn’t Wait to Fix a Coolant Leak

Coolant does more than prevent your engine from freezing in winter — it’s essential for regulating engine temperature year-round. A small leak can quickly turn into a big problem if your engine overheats, potentially causing warped cylinder heads, a cracked engine block, or complete engine failure.

Warning signs of a coolant leak include:

  • Puddles of colored fluid under your car
  • A sweet smell coming from the engine bay
  • The temperature gauge running higher than normal
  • Low coolant warning light
  • Steam coming from under the hood
